Recognize the ENEMY!

One of the first steps in becoming a new creation in Christ is to bring an end to ungodly practices and begin to practice those things that are in line with the Word and spirit of God. While we usually focus first on the way we act, we leave ourselves vulnerable in a very important area: Our thoughts. Specifically, the thoughts that we allow ourselves to respond to.

Negative thoughts are of the devil. Any thoughts that go against the fruits of the spirit are of the devil. Any thoughts that are contrary to any of the virtues that Christ encourages us to follow in His Word, are not of God.

For example, if someone hurts you and the prevailing thought is one of revenge or retaliation, or keeping malice or saying hurtful things, then we know that is not the ministering of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 says ” But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control; against such things there is no law.”
Likewise, if a thought tries to discourage us by telling us that we can never serve the Lord because we are too sinful, or that there is no point praying because we are so laden with sin that the Lord can never forgive us, then we know for certain that the thought is not of the Spirit of God, as God’s word clearly states in 1 John 1:9 ” If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The enemy knows when to attack. The enemy knows how to attack. He will never attack us where or when we are at our strongest, he attacks us when and where we are the most vulnerable. If he cannot get us directly, then he will use the people around us. Even the people closest to us. He gets to us through our feelings, our thoughts, our emotions and our fears because he knows that these are the things that are with us all the time and they are the things that we usually respond to. That is why Christians have to be aware, so that when these thoughts begin to come, or when we begin to get overwhelmed by our emotions, feelings and fears, it is then that we are to remove our focus from all of these elements that change from time to time and shift it to the one thing that is unchanging in our lives. Our God!

The God of yesterday, today and forever. The Rock of our Salvation. The God who does not waver, but remains steadfast. The God whose counsel is timeless, relevant and accurate. We are to silence those negative thoughts by proclaiming and claiming the Word of God. 2 Corinthians 10:5 states ” We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.”

Our Lord will never lead us into sin. His Word saves us from sin. Once we put our focus on the Lord, we start to see Satan’s deceit for the lies that they really are.

Another means of attack that the devil uses is to twist the truth or misrepresent the Word of God as he did with Eve in Genesis 3:1-5, and as he did with Jesus during the temptation in the wilderness. If we are not grounded firmly in the truth of the Word of God, we again, become easy prey for the devil. It is therefore extremely important that we learn to recognize the enemy, the devil, Satan, and all of his tactics and modes of operation. We need to recognize them when they are subtle and when they are overt. It is also extremely important to remember that when we face various trials and tribulations, even though it is often other people that we are contending with, the reality is as it states in Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

The devil’s only goal, as far as the children of God are concerned, is to rob them of their salvation, and he will use every trick in his book and everything in his power to see to it that he succeeds. What the devil also knows is that the Lord will come to the aid of all those who believe in Him and call upon Him, so it is Satan’s plan to have us so preoccupied with his deceptions, that we overlook calling out to the Lord.

The chorus of a song that I love states “The voice of truth tells me a different story, the voice of truth says” do not be afraid”. The voice of truth says “this is for my glory”. Out of all the voices calling out to me, I will learn to listen and believe the voice of truth.”

May the Lord grant us the discernment to be able to recognize the enemy in every form that he presents himself and of course the discernment to be able recognize His own voice. The voice of Truth. In Jesus’ name.

Share your thoughts that you might encourage your brethren.

In Christ,
The handmaid at His feet.
